The ideal resource for setting up and working with therapy groups

Group therapy is an increasingly popular treatment modality for a variety of disorders and client populations. Essentials of Group Therapy provides both professionals and students with a clear overview of the group therapy process, its history and development, and the critical skills required for working effectively with groups. This valuable guide presents several models and techniques for setting up and leading a number of different types of groups, explained with a distinct practitioner focus.

As part of the Essentials of Mental Health Practice series, this book provides information mental health professionals need to practice knowledgeably, efficiently, and ethically in today's behavioral healthcare environment. Each concise chapter features numerous callout boxes highlighting key concepts, bulleted points, and extensive illustrative material, as well as "Test Yourself" questions that help you gauge and reinforce your grasp of the information covered.

Essentials of Group Therapy focuses on the practical aspects of deciding when and for whom group therapy is effective, building groups for long- and short-term therapy, as well as support and self-help groups, and managing the issues that can arise as groups develop. The authors provide examples of how to handle leadership, training, and diversity, as well as ethical and legal issues in an effective and compassionate manner. Essentials of Group Therapy provides an invaluable reference for mental health students and professionals studying or working in any practice.

This trusted practitioner resource and text helps the busy clinician find the right psychiatric diagnosis and avoid the many pitfalls that lead to errors. Covering every disorder routinely encountered in clinical practice, Allen Frances provides the ICD-9-CM codes and (where feasible) ICD-10-CM codes required for billing, a useful screening question, a descriptive prototype, diagnostic tips, and other disorders that must be ruled out. Frances was instrumental in the development of past editions of DSM and provides helpful cautions on questionable aspects of DSM-5. An index of common presenting symptoms lists possible diagnoses that must be considered for each. The Appendix (which can also be accessed at the companion website) features a Crosswalk to ICD-10-CM codes.

This book explores tensions surrounding the teaching of literacy in three settings of nontraditional adult education: correctional education, vocational education, and the Highlander Folk School. What literacy is supposed to do, and thus what it means, varies widely across these discourses. At its center of the book is the belief that teachers and scholars must understand the worlds toward which they, and the institutions they teach within, aspire to create through the process of education.

A First Course in Chaotic Dynamical Systems: Theory and Experiment, Second Edition

The long-anticipated revision of this well-liked textbook offers many new additions. In the twenty-five years since the original version of this book was published, much has happened in dynamical systems. Mandelbrot and Julia sets were barely ten years old when the first edition appeared, and most of the research involving these objects then centered around iterations of quadratic functions. This research has expanded to include all sorts of different types of functions, including higher-degree polynomials, rational maps, exponential and trigonometric functions, and many others. Several new sections in this edition are devoted to these topics.

The area of dynamical systems covered in A First Course in Chaotic Dynamical Systems: Theory and Experiment, Second Edition is quite accessible to students and also offers a wide variety of interesting open questions for students at the undergraduate level to pursue. The only prerequisite for students is a one-year calculus course (no differential equations required); students will easily be exposed to many interesting areas of current research. This course can also serve as a bridge between the low-level, often non-rigorous calculus courses, and the more demanding higher-level mathematics courses.

Features

  • More extensive coverage of fractals, including objects like the Sierpinski carpet and others
that appear as Julia sets in the later sections on complex dynamics, as well as an actual
    chaos "game."
  • More detailed coverage of complex dynamical systems like the quadratic family
    and the exponential maps.
  • New sections on other complex dynamical systems like rational maps.
  • A number of new and expanded computer experiments for students to perform.
  • About the Author

Robert L. Devaney is currently professor of mathematics at Boston University. He received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley under the direction of Stephen Smale. He taught at Northwestern University and Tufts University before coming to Boston University in 1980. His main area of research is dynamical systems, primarily complex analytic dynamics, but also including more general ideas about chaotic dynamical systems. Lately, he has become intrigued with the incredibly rich topological aspects of dynamics, including such things as indecomposable continua, Sierpinski curves, and Cantor bouquets.

Written in response to a book on the origins of morality by his erstwhile friend Paul Rée, the three essays comprising The Genealogy of Morals -- all three advancing the critique of Christian morality set forth in Beyond Good and Evil -- are among Nietzsche's most sustained and cohesive work.
In the first essay -- starting from a linguistic analysis of words such as "good," "bad," and "evil" -- Nietzsche sets up a contrast between what he calls "master" morality and "slave" morality and shows how strength and action have often been replaced by passivity and nihilism. The next essay, looking into the origins of guilt and punishment, shows how the concept of justice was born -- and how internalization of this concept led to the development of what people called "the soul." In the third essay, Nietzsche dissects the meaning of ascetic ideals.
It is not Nietzsche's intention to reject ascetic ideals, "slave" morality, or internalized values out of hand; his main concern is to show that culture and morality, rather than being eternal verities, are human-made. Whether or not you agree with all of his conclusions, his writing is of such clarity and brilliance that you will find reading The Genealogy of Morals nothing short of exhilarating.
